Money Talks 4/13/18

What’s happening in the world of A Dime at a Time?

Honestly, not a lot!  Pretty much the same old same old, working and paying off debt!  Of course this past week I was thrilled to see the ZERO balance on our smallest debt.  I won’t miss that bill one bit!  While I would prefer to close the account, we won’t do so just yet.  I’m hoping we will be able to pay off the biggie (Discover) we are tackling next before the zero percent promo rate expires in November.  If we don’t, at least we have a card for transferring any remaining balance.   [Read more…]

Oh, that uncomfortable feeling!

April 9, 2018 By: Lucy11 Comments

“Step one is the baby emergency fund. That is the one I am talking about, while people are trying to get out of debt(not mortgage). Dave wants you to be uncomfortable. If you are happy and comfortable then you are going to take longer to pay off your debt. That is why he says to sell everything. Once you pay off your first debt you get a “high” which makes you work harder to pay off your next debt . And it just keeps going. If you are putting some in saving and some in retirement and some towards debt it will take you 3 times as long. His plan really works. It is HARD! It is UNCOMFORTABLE! That is the point. You will never want to go back into debt.” ~ Marybeth

The above quote is from a comment left by Marybeth on the blog post regarding how much to keep in a starter emergency fund. The part about “It is hard!  It is uncomfortable” struck a chord with me as I feel this can apply to other steps of the Dave Ramsey plan, too.  In our case, it is baby step two. [Read more…]

After much deliberation…

April 5, 2018 By: Lucy30 Comments

Who would have thought there would be so many different thoughts on what debt we should tackle next?  I thank every one of you for taking the time to share your opinion.  Trust me when I say this wasn’t an easy decision to make, but ultimately it came down to how we can best keep pushing forward with getting rid of our massive debt.   [Read more…]

Car Repair and other happenings

March 25, 2018 By: Lucy10 Comments

The car repair/maintenance work we had done on Friday came under budget by $69.  The total bill came to $1431.  There were a few extra items (bolts, etc.) but I was able to offset these charges by reducing the initial estimate by using a $25 coupon and also opting not to have the cabin air filter replaced.  We don’t smoke, and as for dust and pollen, we only drive this car in the Winter, so I didn’t feel this was an issue.  Before we switch over to our Summer vehicle, we will get an oil change done.  We will need tires before next season, but that will wait until later in the year. Reflections on a Hot Topic

March 22, 2018 By: Lucy10 Comments

Yesterday’s question and answer post about how much to keep in a baby emergency fund seemed to be a bit of a hot topic-well, at least compared to other posts I’ve written.  Lol It was also nice to “see” some new faces.  I appreciate all those of you who joined in on the conversation.   [Read more…]

Ten days and saving the best for last

March 13, 2018 By: Lucy14 Comments

Where have the past ten days gone?  I meant to update this blog on more than one occasion but time somehow got away from me. I can’t say that I’ve been doing anything particularly exciting. Just doing the usual, working and paying down debt!   [Read more…]

Money Talks

March 3, 2018 By: Lucy8 Comments

It was a busy week.   Well, at least for me it was!  I managed to work four days in the office (cha-ching!) and (cha-ching) today did a five-hour shift taking care of the preemie.  Being in debt, I never turn down the hours that become available.  I’ve already been asked to cover two full days next week with the preemie.  Good thing as things will be slower in the office. When it comes to getting out of debt, is it possible to be both active and passive?

March 1, 2018 By: Lucy18 Comments

“You are so lucky to have someone who is willing to take the time and help you. My husband is on board with getting the debt paid off, but he doesn’t want anything to do with it – really doesn’t want any details at all so it is hard for me to sometimes figure things out on my own.” ~ Sue

The above quote is a comment made on a blog post over at Destination:  Planet Debt Free.  Other than that she and her husband are also desperately wanting to get out of debt, I don’t know much about Sue.  Based on one of her other comments, I’m guessing that they are in a similar age bracket.  What struck me, though, was the part about her husband being on board with wanting to get out of debt, but also not wanting anything to do with it.  Is it possible to be both an active and passive participant in the war against debt?

I think so.   [Read more…]

Forget the Joneses. I’m keeping up with the Debt Crushers!

February 25, 2018 By: Lucy12 Comments

You know what truly inspires me as Hubs and I travel the road to debt freedom?  It is reading about the successes of others also paying off debt!  While I’m always thrilled to see their progress, I want to keep up.  Forget the Joneses.  These days I’m doing my best to keep up with the Debt Crushers! The Pending Demise of The Beast!

It’s going to happen!  The Beast (aka our Discover card) is going to be taken out!  No, we didn’t have a secret money stash, win the lotto, or receive an inheritance.  What we did have, however, was an item up for sale that finally sold.
