Preparing to say goodbye to our cat

January 13, 2022 By: Lucy4 Comments

Having an old cat, we knew it was only a matter of time before we would need to say goodbye.  We had planned to send our furball off to Rainbow Bridge last Fall, but we couldn’t go through with it when the appointment day(s) came.  We made two such appointments.  Hubs even dug the hole.  This morning I made the third call and set the appointment for the upcoming Monday.

Having a pet euthanized is not something anyone wants to do, but there is a time when it is necessary.  The cat has been pooping (thankfully, not peeing) on a throw rug and our hardwood flooring for several months.  I know, disgusting.  Fortunately, this hasn’t been an everyday occurrence, but lately, happening more often.  Based on the cat’s behavior, I’m pretty sure dementia is to blame.  I’m not a vet but have seen several changes pointing to this as a real possibility.  Today, my breaking point was when I found that the cat had peed on the throw rug.  Enough is enough.

The cost of euthanization is $60, but there are also options for the cat’s remains to consider.  We have three.  Take the cat home for a private burial (free but challenging with our snow), cremate (with no ashes returned – $75), or a private cremation (ashes returned – $210).  Given our snowy weather, I’m leaning toward the $75 option.  I don’t feel “the need” to have the cat’s ashes returned to us, plus I don’t like the $210 price tag.  Hubs may want to go with the free option.  Not so much to save money, but more because we have always buried our pets whenever possible.  I will leave the decision up to Hubs.

To end on a much more positive note, Hub’s and good SIL’s attorney is being more “forceful” with nasty SIL’s attorney.   Today “our” attorney sent an email to Nasty SIL’s attorney regarding distribution of assets.  Nasty SIL is now beyond the timeline set by the trust to settle the estate.

Thanks, Chris. I’m giving our cat extra loving during her last few days.

Ahhh, so sorry about your cat. Always hard, even when you know it’s coming. One of my friends I’ve known since Kindergarten just posted the other day her cat just turned 22 years old. What a long life it’s had!

22 years is a good long life for a cat! If it weren’t for our cats “accidents” (although I think she now forgets where her litter box is located), I wouldn’t have made the appt. We just can’t have her doing that in the house. At 20, she has had a good long life for being a stray!

Annoyances

Ever have a day where you feel annoyed for stupid reasons?  It is things that aren’t life-changing or even earth-shattering.  Today is one of those days for me.  In general, I try to keep my blog upbeat, because hey, who in their right mind would want to read about someone else’s annoyances?  But since you are […]
