When you’re feeling down about your debt

August 13, 2017 By: Lucy4 Comments

There are days the journey feels long.

Today was one of those days for me.  I was feeling down about our debt.  I can’t say there was any one particular reason I was feeling this way.  I was just feeling the blues, and that is all there was to it.  This being in debt is getting old!

Funny how one’s perspective changes as they travel this journey towards debt freedom.  This financial mess isn’t a new thing that just came to light when we started on this road. I guess now that we have committed to finally doing something about it; the game has completely changed.  We can no longer be complacent, and this changes everything!

It is on days like this that I need to take a look at the good, and focus on the positives.

  • We have a plan and are sticking to it!
  • We have eliminated over $10,000 of consumer debt in less than eight months!
  • We have an emergency fund which doesn’t involve whipping out a credit card!
  • We have cash-flowed a crazy amount of expenses that would have otherwise ended up on a credit card.
  • We have taken care of our heating needs.  That is a biggie when you live in an area that sees a lot of cold weather!
  • We have started contributing to sinking funds to handle future irregular expenses.

I’m sure there will be other days to come that I’ll feel the weight of this journey.  Looking back, would I want to return to our old ways of handling money?  NEVER!  Even though we still have a good distance to go, we have come way too far to give up now.  I, for one, am not going back!

What do you do on days when your journey feels long?  How do you get through it?

I’m sorry your having a blue day. I suppose when I have those days I also reflect back on how far we have come, play with the pups and take a nap( oh wait, that’s every weekend). Today I was happy to pull weeds in a yard I never thought we would have again (it’s still a rental but at least it’s a house with a yard).
    Cheerier days are ahead, friend

Thanks, Patti! I appreciate that! Funny how even pulling some weeds can make us feel better!

Great reminder, Lucy 🙂 It’s easy to get so gazelle-intense that we become discontent with where we are. I’m guilty of this usually about once a month (when I’m writing up next month’s budget). Like you said, it’s important to remember the progress made already rather than solely focus on what hasn’t been accomplished yet. My wife is good at reminding me of that, haha!

Thanks, Kyle. This road is not an easy one to travel. It is often easy to feel dissatisfied with the progress we have made. Focus on the postive and keep on going!

Shopping Day: Sticking to my List (Almost!)

As much as I didn’t want to go, I went to the city to do a tiny bit of shopping.  My primary reason was to pick up two prescriptions that I couldn’t get via mail order.  Since I would be driving past the thrift store, I dropped off all the items I had gathered before […]
